Who are Families in Partnership?

Families in Partnership (previously known as Parents in Partnership) has been providing advocacy to family carers since 1992.

In 2010, we changed our service to provide Family Advocacy, which is a natural extension of our previous work.

What is Family Advocacy?

Advocacy means speaking on behalf of someone, or representing their needs, in order to safeguard that person's interests and rights.

Family Advocacy involves working with families and allies to enable them to act as advocates with, and on behalf of, the person with a learning disability. The disabled person is at the core of family advocacy, and their rights and interests are paramount.

What kind of things can FiP help with?

Family Advocacy is offered where a family member has complex needs relating to their severe learning disability, and where those needs give rise to interconnected, additional needs and challenges within the family as a whole.

By severe learning disability we mean people who need significant support with most daily tasks, and additional physical or mobility problems.

By complex needs we mean any additional problem, this might include but is not limited to, mental health issues, sensory impairment or behaviour which challenges. It might also be part of the family make up, for example an older carer.

We focus on periods of change and transition. We also work with families to establish Circles of Support, Person Centred Planning and other issues and topics connected with personalisation.
We work with all family members to get a common view of what they want to achieve.

We recognise that any rights come with responsibilities, meaning that any decisions that might affect the family should consider that effect. The nature of our service means that, ideally, we need to spend time getting to know the family, so the earlier we can be involved, the better.

When the family has decided on the view they wish to put forward, and the action to take, we will support them to promote this view and take this action.

This may be through support at meetings, or helping to write letters or make phone calls.
